Carrie Louise (Williams) Poston, 79, resided with her husband, John in Woodlawn, Ohio. Carrie was born on April 21, 1945, in Jamestown, North Carolina to the late loving parents of Henry Clay Williams Sr. and Mary Alberta (Staton) Williams. Carrie was the third daughter of six children.
She passed away at 7:27 am, Thursday, August 2024 in the ICU ward of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
John often remarked that in their 58 years of marriage, he never heard one disparaging or vile word coming from Carrie. She was always positive and fun to be with. She is dearly missed
Carrie is survived by her husband John and three sons John Furmon Poston IV, Carl Leslie Poston II (Carol), of Cincinnati, OH, and Michael William Claybrooks Poston of Winston-Salem, NC. Her surviving brothers are Firnest G. Williams (Ophelia) of Mitchellville, MD and Henry Clay Williams, Jr. (Josephine) of High Point, NC.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Deloris Williams Lee, Julia Williams Blakely and Earl Lee Williams. There are hosts of nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, relatives, and dear friends.
Carrie graduated from William Penn High School, High Point, NC in 1963. She met John at North Carolina A&T College (now known as NC A&T State University) in January 1966. They were married at the US Naval Base, Charleston, SC on July 13, 1966, when John was ordered to active duty when his Navy military college deferment expired. While stationed with husband John at the US Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she began her studies for a master’s program at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, to work on an MBA degree.
Carrie graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
With Carrie’s support and encouragement, her three sons, John, Carl, and Michael, obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1996. Carrie received the Dan Beard Council, BSA Silver Beaver Award in 2001.
She was an active supporter and volunteer driver for the Meals On Wheels program. Additionally, she was awarded the Kiwanis Club of Greenhills/Forest Park for her support and participation in the 1997 Homearama Kiwanis Volunteer program. Carrie has worked on several Habitat for Humanity projects in the Cincinnati, OH area. For her many years of volunteering service to the community, Carrie received several “Presidential Service Awards.”
Carrie was a trustee of the Greenhills Community Church, Presbyterian, Greenhills, OH. During her three sons’ early schooling, she was active and held prominent offices in their parent teachers’ organizations (PTA’s).
She loved her membership of the Forest Park Women’s Club. She accepted an invitation to join the club in 1986, remaining an active member until her death. She was one of the first African-American women to join the organization and became the club’s president in 1996.
The couple remained in their home in Forest Park for more than thirty years until Carrie’s health condition required that they relocated to a resident with a limited number of stairs.
