Mattie M. Townsend Cooperwood was born in West Point Mississippi on October 13, 1935, to the late Clarence Townsend and Bennie Will Gibson. She married the love of her life Rosevelt Cooperwood Jr. on March 8, 1958. They moved to Cincinnati Ohio in 1960. Mattie worked as a domestic worker for several years for multiple families and then worked for Princeton High School in Glendale, Ohio until she retired.
Mattie met no strangers. She was a people person always wearing a smile. If she had something to tell you she had no problem letting you know. When you asked Mattie ‘how she was’ she would reply, “I’m blessed by the best and happy to be here.”
Mattie gained her wings on the morning of September 21, 2024. Preceding her in death is her husband, Rosevelt Cooperwood. Sisters: Clara Moore, Julia Bell Steele and Rutha Baisben. Brothers: Benjamin, Nathan, and Charles Townsend, and George Finley, her nephew she considered as a brother.
She leaves to cherish her memory aunts Ida Bell and Cellie. Her stepdaughter Elaine Blackman (Mathew), grandson Delvon Blackman, great granddaughter Journee Carnegie and Virginia Ewing a niece who she also considered as a sister. Sister-in-law Alma Stephen, brother-in-law Herman (Judy) and Dewitt Cooperwood. She also leaves 6 nephews, 7 nieces and a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews and friends.
