Hollie “Shavonne” Champion was born on March 16, 1985, to Delores Champion Knowles (who preceded her in death) and Jasper Knowles. She was the fifth of her mother’s six children, with two siblings, Tangie Champion and William Champion, also having passed before her.
Shavonne is survived by her Godmother, Carolyn Rachel; her sisters, Robin Champion and Tamica Champion; her brothers, Joshua Knowles and Rico Mosley (God brother); and her three cherished children, Kenneisha (Draco), Keniya (Jay Ping), and Kaleb (Phat Daddy). She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, with special favorites including Vic, MarMar, Frionna, and Faith (Phat Baby), alongside many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins, particularly her beloved Brien and Nayahna.
Growing up in Avondale and Downtown, Shavonne attended Rothenberg, Whittier, and Project Success schools. She found great passion in working in home care. Dedicating much of her time to taking in and caring for other people’s children a quality she inherited from her mom, who always had an open door policy for anyone in need.
As a proud mother, Shavonne embodied the meaning of having your children’s backs; it was always them against the world. They were her everything, and nothing was off-limits when it came to protecting, caring for, and comforting them.
A cancer survivor, Shavonne faced her challenges with incredible strength and determination. She loved to unwind in long, relaxing baths, often joking about keeping it clean, but it was truly her love for water that brought her peace, a moment for her to breathe. Known affectionately as the “President of OCD,” she believed in cleaning and everyone had something to clean. Starting at the crack of dawn and never accepting excuses if you knew her, you knew the drill! Though she could be tough she would curse you out, put you out, and then call to ask why you hadn’t reached out or come to see her she will be missed.
Shavonne was recognized for her loud voice and even bigger heart; she would give you the shirt off her back without hesitation. In her eyes, nothing you did was wrong; she would always reassure you with the phrase, “You ain’t wrong, Annie; you ain’t wrong,” even when you might have been.
And let’s not forget her love for sneakers! We can all picture her now walking through the pearly gates in her gold sneakers. Shavonne will be deeply missed but her spirit will continue to uplift her children and everyone who knew her. Though she has departed, we find comfort in knowing she now watches over us all with love.
