Hattie Hester Carr was born on May 2, 1917. She transitioned from this earthly life into the arms of her Savior and Lord, Jesus the Christ, on Monday, December 29, 2014.
Hattie was born in Leon County, Florida to the late John and Ethel Hester. She grew up in Lakeland, Florida. She married the late Bernard Connor and to this union was born twin sons, Leonard and Bernard, and a daughter, Imogene North. Both Leonard and Imogene preceded her in death.
She later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where she met and married the late Oscar Carr. To this union was born one daughter, Phyllis Ann (Carr) Clemons.
She accepted Christ at an early age. She united with St. Paul A.M.E. Church in 1943 where she served as a member of the Usher Board, Missionary Society and the Senior‟s Ministry. Lovingly known by her St. Paul family as the “Bishop”, she served as president of the Senior‟s ministry up until the time of her death. She thoroughly enjoyed the Seniors‟ numerous field trips, geta- ways and restaurant excursions.
She was known for her forthrightness, seasoned with grace, kindness and a soft spoken voice. She enjoyed giving to others. She was always willing to share words of wisdom, encouragement and correction when necessary. Her beautiful long life has touched the lives of many.
Lovingly known by her family as “Mema”, she was a source of strength. With the Lord‟s help, she learned to persevere through the various trials of this earthly life. She taught her family to do the same. It can truly be said that she kept her eyes focused on the Lord who made heaven and earth. Her love for her family was unconditional. As her time on this earth was drawing to a close, she expressed her desire that the Hester Family Reunions would continue. “Don‟t let that go,” she said.
She was an exquisite example of inner and outer beauty, style, grace and class. She has exchanged the adornment of her beautiful hats for the crown of life when she responded to the Lord‟s call to come home. She will truly be missed.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: children, Bernard Connor (Irene) and Phyllis A. (Carr) Clemons (Randall); grandchildren, Brandon Clemons, Jordan Clemons, Stephen North, Tony North, Christopher North, Quincy North, Leonard Connor, Jr., Michael Connor, Sherian Fields and Cherry Crooms; sisters, Annie Walden (Melrose), Faye, Virginia (Chris) and Barbara Hester; brothers, Ronald Salahuddin (Emma) and Charles Hester (Marguerite). She was preceded in death by brothers, Jimmy, John, Nathaniel, Robert, Howard and Henry Hester; sisters, Cora, Mamie and Joyce; sister-in-law, Alberta Hester; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, one of which preceded her in death. She will also be missed by a large host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special friend who also mourns her loss is Eddie Miller.
