The world became a better place with the birth of Elouise Elizabeth Walker on September 8, 1921. She was born to the union of Flossie and Alfredo Sands in Key West, Florida. After a recent illness, she was summoned home to be with God on July 15, 2015.
Elouise attended and graduated from Douglas High School in Key West, Florida, where she obtained the title “Miss Douglas” two consecutive years. She was a member of the Douglas High School State Champion-ship ladies basketball team. She was also the President of the Children of Mary at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. This would be the beginning of her lifelong mission of volunteering. After leaving Key West, she traveled to California, where she married her high school sweetheart and soulmate, Alvin O. Walker. While Alvin was in the Army, Elouise resided in various places including Atlanta, New York, and Miami before settling in Cincinnati, where they would raise their two daughters, Elvira and Alvina and she would work as a home healthcare provider for many years.
As a faithful servant of God, Elouise sought and found a church home at Mother of God and subse-quently, St. Mark Catholic Church in Evanston. After moving to Bond Hill in 1966, Elouise joined St. Agnes Parish. There she would become a member of the Ladies Sodality and the St. Isaac Jogues Ladies Auxiliary in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus, where she was the first African-American to hold office. She was a tireless volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and the St. Agnes Grade School office. She was a member of the St. Agnes Bereavement Committee and the Church Choir. Elouise’s other volunteer efforts included the PTA at St. Mark Catholic School and the Evanston Neighborhood Club. Elouise was known to many as an advocate for those with no voice. She would give continuously with no expected return on her investment. She was a source of strength to many and will be missed by all. We were blessed to be a part of the life of the inspirational, invaluable, unforgettable Mrs. Elouise E. Walker.
Elouise was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 56 years, Alvin O. Walker. She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Elvira L. Coaston and Alvina E. Lindsey (Cornelius); four grandchildren, Steve L. Coaston, III (Pat), Tracie L. Coaston, Amber N. Lindsey and Celeste A. Lindsey; extended family, McKenzy Brackens and Alexandria (Lexey) Brackens; her devoted Maple Knoll family, the Jewish Hospital staff and a host of other relatives and friends.
