Eddie Hobbs, son of the late Warner Schaeffer and Ruth Hobbs, was born on October 27, 1930 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His grandparents, George and Matilda Hobbs were from Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky. The family experienced a great tragedy when Eddie was 4 years old. An accidental house fire took the lives of four of his siblings: David, Earnest, Martha and Robert. His mother died the next day. Eddie and his brother, Millikin went to live with their Uncle Millikin and Aunt Mary in Cincinnati and also their Aunt Alma Norris in Lorraine, Ohio. They remained close with their sister, Hattie after she was married, and Eddie frequently visited his brother and sister and his nieces and nephews and was a big part of their upbringing.
He attended Columbian Elementary School and Withrow High School. He later joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Squadron 3704 in San Antonio, Texas and Louisiana and was honorably discharged after his years of service. Eddie worked as a Nursing Assistant on the Psychiatric Unit of the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he worked for 34 years until he retired in 1986.
In April of 1967, Eddie joined in Holy Matrimony to Susie Marie Gentry and to this union, two daughters were born: Edna Marie and Emily Sue. The girls became part of a uniquely blended family including Susie’s older son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Marian Gentry and their children, Jermaine, Jan’el and Joel. Emily, Edna, Jermaine, Jan’el and Joel grew up together.
Eddie united early with Mother of God Catholic Church in Walnut Hills, at the encouragement of his sister, Hattie Wilfong. There he served as an altar boy and was actively involved in various church activities. He later joined St. Mark Catholic Church, where he was a member for over 40 years. There he served in numerous groups and ministries such as liturgical reading during mass, offering, bible study, after church coffee service, and the usher board. He was an avid historian and served on several committees to help improve race relations in the Catholic Church. He continued his ministry when St. Mark merged with other churches to form the Church of the Resurrection, where he especially enjoyed fellowshipping at the 8am service with his friends. He was a member of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) at St. Mark Catholic Elementary School where her daughters, Edna and Emily attended. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus.
Eddie loved his girls and was an active father and was heavily involved in their school activities, programs and sports activities at St. Mark Catholic Elementary School, Purcell Marian High School and their preparation for college at University of Dayton and Ohio University. He could always be seen and “heard” at all their games cheering them on as well as on the road making trips to their colleges and taking lots of pictures. Looking through albums searching for pictures of him, it was realized that he was the one behind the camera taking pictures of everyone at every event, birthday, trip and holiday. He patiently put together all of the bicycles, big wheels, doll houses and cooked with them on Saturday nights. He also taught them how to face challenges and never give up. He loved studying and discussing world and religious history and politics. He also loved fishing, bowling, baseball, softball, gardening, doting on his grandchildren and watching his beloved Cleveland Browns.
In addition to being a dedicated father and husband, he was also a beloved brother, uncle and friend to all who he came in contact with. He loved his family and kept in touch with his cousins in Louisville, Kentucky. He was full of life and lived his life out loud with a laugh that could fill any room.
